CUPERTINO, Calif. -- Luminous Networks, a leading provider of multi-service transport platforms that support voice, data, video, and wavelength services, announced today that China's Ministry of Information Industry (MII) has certified Luminous Networks’ PacketWave™ E-Series platform for metropolitan area networks. The Luminous PacketWave family of multi-service transport platforms ranging from metro core to access layer products has all been certified by MII. Luminous Networks is the first company with an entire product line based on Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) technology to receive MII approval. RPR is an emerging standard for switching packets over a physical ring topology. This recent certification enables Luminous to advance its leadership in China’s metro markets, and ship its multi-service transport platforms to the largest telecommunications providers in China for the build-out of the country's metropolitan area networks.

The MII certification affirms China's commitment to deploy the most advanced metro networking technology in its telecommunications and enterprise networks. Luminous is gaining a significant opportunity to further expand its market presence in one of the fastest growing telecommunications markets in the world.

“Luminous PacketWave E-Series platforms have been successfully deployed in the enterprise market worldwide,” said Charles Barry, CTO of Luminous Networks. “MII certification of the platform expands its presence in the market to include China's telecommunication companies. The E-Series platforms offer a rich set of data, video and voice services in an extremely small footprint and come in a price that is attractive to carrier and enterprise customers alike."

“The MII certification of the Luminous PacketWave family of products gives us additional ammunition in paving the way for new business opportunities in China,” said Yudan Jin, general manager and president of Luminous China. “Luminous Networks is providing telecommunications and enterprise users in China with flexible and cost-efficient solutions for their metro network needs.”

Luminous Networks’ PacketWave E-Series platform successfully passed an extensive battery of voice and data tests performed by the MII in their Beijing lab. These included tests of PacketWave's throughput, latency, quality of service and network management. The PacketWave E-Series platform also successfully passed tests on the delivery of traditional Ethernet services; transparent Ethernet lease line services; TDM lease line services and MPLS services while experiencing heavy emulated Ethernet, TDM and PBX voice traffic.

With its China headquarters in Shanghai, Luminous recently opened a new sales and support office in Beijing. Luminous customers include the largest telecommunications carriers in China, such as China NetCom and China Power Telecom. In addition, Luminous has joined the China RPR Standardization Organization (CCSA), which helps to develop and extend RPR technology in China.
