Streamcore announced having patents pending for its advanced audio and video traffic classification technology

SAN FRANCISCO -- Streamcore, the global provider of visibility and dynamic performance control solutions to manage interactive applications and real-time communications delivery over the WAN, today announced having patents pending for its advanced audio and video traffic classification technology. Streamcore’s patents are related to intelligent Real-Time Protocol (RTP) passive analysis and key attributes or signatures extraction to automatically detect the different types of Unified Communications & Collaboration (UCC) traffic. By providing such advanced Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) technology for UCC, Streamcore solutions can then apply very granular visibility and control to ensure the best performance for business-critical UCC traffic over the WAN.

Enterprises’ use of UCC is on the rise. Maintaining acceptable service levels for UCC, and especially audio and video communications, is a primary concern that enterprises have when considering the adoption of UCC. To monitor and prioritize these flows, enterprises must first identify them on the network. However, this task is becoming increasingly more complex with UCC convergence. First, audio and video traffic use dynamic UDP port ranges. Secondly, to date, different devices with distinct IP addresses were used for each different type of traffic (e.g., a PC for data, an IP phone for audio, or a videoconferencing system for video). Now, a Unified Communication (UC) client (installed on a PC with a softphone and webcam, a UC phone or a tablet) uses a single IP address to exchange business applications, audio and video traffic. This change has rendered traditional classification processes found in routers useless, since they are based on TCP/UDP ports or IP addresses.

Streamcore’s patent-pending technology relies on heuristics methods to automatically detect on-the-fly audio, video or content-sharing flows and extract key attributes. Different types of UCC flows can be distinguished, including Microsoft Lync desktop video communications, Polycom HD video conferencing, VoIP using traditional G.711, G.723 or G.729 codecs or new advanced wideband codecs. By utilizing Streamcore’s patent-pending classification technology and advanced visibility and control features, enterprises can ensure the success of UCC initiatives on a converged network.
