January 27, 2003
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- Sprint (NYSE: FON, PCS) today introduced three next-generation services that provide businesses with robust, secure, and cost-effective IP-based alternatives to traditional networking solutions. The products, SprintLink Frame Relay TM, SprintLink Packet Private LineTM and SprintLink Virtual LAN Services TM, strengthen the Sprint global enterprise network portfolio and enhance the company's strategy for helping customers establish new IP services or transition from legacy services to those that are IP-based."Customer demands are exceeding the capabilities of traditional legacy networking solutions," said Randy Ritter, vice president of product/portfolio management at Sprint. "These new SprintLink services enable customers to tap the power, flexibility and security of the Sprint global IP network, SprintLink, to boost the performance of their traditional Layer 2 network services. Additionally, if a customer later elects to transition from one of these services to a Sprint IP VPN solution, we can deliver a truly seamless migration path with ease and simplicity."With the introduction of SprintLink Frame Relay, Packet Private Line and Virtual LAN Services, Sprint becomes the first global provider to offer products based on Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol Version 3 (L2TPv3). This technology is an emerging industry standard and feature of Cisco IOS® Software. L2TPv3 supports IP encapsulation of numerous Layer 2 protocols and provides authenticated tunneling to allow Layer 2 traffic to securely traverse a native IP core. Sprint has implemented L2TPv3 across its entire IP network without having to re-engineer the network or change its architecture. Sprint Corp.
