Samsung Electronics and Jungo Software introduce a reference design for integrated broadband gateways, routers, and DSL modems
April 23, 2003
SAN FRANCISCO -- Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a leader in system-on-a-chip technology, and Jungo Software Technologies, Inc., a leading provider of residential gateway software, today introduced an integrated software and silicon solution providing Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) manufacturers with a production-ready infrastructure that speeds up development of broadband gateways, routers and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) modems."We worked closely with Jungo to ensure a high level of integration between OpenRG software and our S5N8947 processor," said Dennis Kim, vice president of Samsung's System LSI Division. “CPE manufacturers can cut precious time off their product development cycles and can add customized features to their gateways.”“By offering manufacturers an integrated software and hardware solution with Samsung, Jungo is able to provide its customers with additional flexibility in product development,” said Ofer Vilenski, president and chief executive officer of Jungo. “Together we have already secured a significant joint design win and we look forward to seeing other gateway products based on the S5N8947 and OpenRG brought to market.”The new solution, unveiled today at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco, combines the Samsung S5N8947 microcontroller with OpenRG, Jungo's software suite for residential and small office/home office (SOHO) gateways. The Samsung S5N8947, a 32-bit RISC communication processor built around the industry-leading low-power ARM7TDMI® core, is ideally suited for use in ADSL modem gateway routers.“The combination of the ARM core-based S5N8947 processor and the Jungo residential/SOHO gateway solution provides a quick time-to-market, flexible home networking solution for OEMs and ODMs,” said Denise Kerstein, networking segment manager for ARM. “It is particularly suitable for low-power and cost-sensitive consumer data networking applications.”Jungo's OpenRG software suite provides a choice of operating systems, broadband applications, drivers and Web-based management, all tightly integrated to ensure high performance and improved time-to-market.The companies' joint solution supports a DSL and Ethernet Wide Area Network (WAN) interface and a variety of local area network (LAN) interfaces including Ethernet, 802.11b and universal serial bus (USB). The OpenRG software provides manufacturers with integrated modules for a Stateful Packet Inspection Firewall, Universal Plug and Play home networking, local Web-based management and remote upgrades.
