SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Juniper Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:JNPR - News) today announced several new product enhancements, features, partnerships and strategic relationships that enable cable multiple system operators (MSOs) to support advanced multimedia services with increased levels of performance, security and dynamic functionality. With the new capabilities, Juniper Networks continues to provide the company's best-in-class secure and assured networking solutions to the cable MSO market.

The new capabilities include:

  • PacketCable(TM) Multimedia (PCMM) support for the SDX-300 Service Deployment System to enable end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS), dynamic bandwidth management and event-based accounting for multimedia applications;

  • Partnerships and interoperability testing to enable a range of new services and to verify capabilities specific to the cable industry;

  • Full ITU Grid Optical support to reduce expenses, simplify operations and better support bandwidth-intensive services such as video on demand

Juniper Networks SDX Service Deployment System now supports PCMM, a CableLabs® specification that provides general-purpose QoS, event-based accounting and security functionality for multimedia applications. MSOs using the PCMM-compliant SDX can dynamically adjust bandwidth requirements and QoS levels to support premium multimedia applications like online gaming, telephony and video-enabled services such as telephony and instant messaging. MSOs using this capability will be able to deliver tiered service bundles to support these and other value-added multimedia services, increasing customer satisfaction and helping to reduce turnover while also improving revenue per subscriber.

"Juniper Networks has always been committed to providing networking solutions that enable our customers to support advanced services with best-in-class levels of security and performance," said Karen Livoli, director of solutions marketing, Juniper Networks. "With today's news, we are extending these capabilities to the cable market, enabling MSOs to deliver the advanced service offerings their customers require."

While subscriber bases continue to grow, MSOs are focused on increasing the average revenue per user. PCMM enables the MSO to gain control of the radio frequency (RF) network and offer premium QoS-based services end-to-end across the network, increasing the potential for value-added services and driving up revenue per user.

The SDX is capable of serving as a PCMM Application Manager, or as both an integrated Application Manager and Policy Server. MSOs can use the SDX to manage services through its embedded policy server, or can use the SDX to manage existing third-party PCMM-compliant Policy Servers. The SDX will also manage services via any PCMM-compliant cable modem termination systems (CMTS) platform. Juniper Networks has already confirmed interoperability between the SDX and CMTS designed to be PCMM-compliant from industry-leading vendors including ARRIS and Motorola.

"Multimedia applications such as videophone, MSO hosted gaming and SIP based voice services will enable MSOs to generate additional revenue in the future but these applications have strict QoS requirements," said Charles Dougherty, corporate vice president, Motorola Connected Home Solutions business. "The proven PCMM interoperability between Motorola's Broadband Services Router (BSR) 64000 CMTS and Juniper Networks SDX Applications Manager and Policy Server will ensure that these applications are given the required QoS on the DOCSIS network to deliver high-quality services to consumers."

"PCMM is an important component of the next-generation network architecture framework, because it enables MSOs to deliver premium multimedia applications with assured levels of QoS," said ARRIS VP Marketing Stan Brovont. "Our C4(TM) CMTS has been designed to be PCMM-compliant, and by combining the C4 with the Juniper Networks SDX Service Deployment System, MSOs can seamlessly link the IP and RF edges of their networks to the core, assuring QoS and assured performance through their entire network."

Juniper also reconfirmed earlier announced partnerships with industry-leading content and application solution providers that will enable MSOs to dynamically adjust QoS and bandwidth allocations to support specific multimedia applications. Juniper Networks and Exent Technologies recently announced the availability of an enhanced solution for online games which allocates more bandwidth to speed game downloads and improve overall game play. Juniper is also teaming with Polycom to develop and offer a video conferencing solution that leverages SDX-enabled QoS at call set-up to improve the collaborative experience for the user.

"The capability that Juniper provides in delivering end-to-end assured quality as driven intelligently by the application and its specific performance requirements is critical to the success of commercial services for an MSO," said Hans Schwarz, SVP and Chief Systems Architect at Polycom.

Also available from Juniper Networks is the new 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) Physical Interface Card (PIC). Utilizing tunable optical technology, it offers extended reach, colored wavelength support across the full C-band ITU Grid, for up to 45 unique wavelengths in a single device. With the ability to adjust via software for future, incremental wavelength additions, the new PIC eliminates the requirement for unique optical transponders in the network and enables immediate capital and operational savings. It provides the operational flexibility and scalability required to support high-bandwidth applications such as high-definition television (HDTV).

With the new capabilities added to Juniper Networks existing best-in-class secure and assured networking solutions, Juniper is an extremely attractive end-to-end solution provider for MSOs. The Juniper Networks solution includes the E-, M-, and T-series routing platforms; strategic relationships with CMTS providers such as ARRIS and Motorola; and the SDX, which unifies the entire solution with its dynamic service control capabilities.
