STOCKHOLM -- Swedish Intertex Data AB today announced the release of their IX68 ADSL2+ modem with SIP capable firewall and optional telephone ports and wireless access point. The IX68 expands upon the capabilities of the predecessor IX66 with higher capacity; extended functionality and several enhancements for SIP based IP telephony. The IX68 is attractively priced with pricing ranging from 260 to 400 dollars and will fill both the data and IP telephony needs for the advanced home users, home workers and offices up to 50 persons.

The IX68 is an ADSL2+ modem supporting ADSL speeds up to 24 Mbps downstream and up to 3 Mbps upstream using the new Annex M standard. It also includes a powerful firewall and NAT router that handles bandwidths up to 70 Mbps and includes 4 Ethernet ports with the capability of setting up DMZs. Several options are available: high speed 802.11b/g wireless access point, 2 ports for analog telephones or faxes (FXS), SIP gateway to the traditional telephone network (FXO) and the Intertex IP-PBX SIP Switch.

Like its predecessor, the IX68 has a unique and extensive SIP support. SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is the Internet standard for live person-to-person IP communication that is expected to create the next significant expansion of Internet usage after email and web surfing. IP telephony or VoIP is one usage of SIP, but SIP is the Internet standard for all kinds of live IP communication such as Instant Messaging, Presence, Video and Application Sharing.

In general, live person-to-person communication does not traverse common firewalls and NAT routers. Therefore, live IP communication, if possible at all, is often restricted to IP telephony islands using unreliable and insecure methods to traverse the firewalls. Furthermore, those islands most often only interoperate through the traditional telephone network. In contrast, the IX68 handles global SIP based IP communication and allows usage of all SIP applications on the LAN and over the Internet. A built-in SIP proxy and registrar dynamically controlling the NAT and firewall, enables SIP communication between the private LAN and the Internet. This allows users behind the IX68 to utilize the full power of SIP based live IP communication, whether offered by service providers or by using the built-in SIP proxy and registrar as a stand-alone SIP server.
