SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ:XLNX) today announced the availability of its complete, ready-to-use solution for SONET based backplanes using the company's flagship Virtex-II ProT Platform FPGAs. Building on the customer-tested RocketIO multi-gigabit serial transceivers, the solution supports data rates of OC-48, OC-192 and beyond. With this solution, system architects now have the ability to create fully programmable backplanes for their systems, while reducing overall design complexity and system costs using the world's leading proven silicon, available today. The company expects its solution to be used in communications and networking equipment such as high-end routers, add-drop multiplexers, and optical cross connects."SONET is one of the most widely used connectivity standard in the communications industry; used not only to move data and voice between cities, but also inside optical networking equipment," said Per Holmberg, director of Programmable Systems Marketing at Xilinx. "By providing a flexible, ready-to-use design solution, built on the industry's only platform FPGA with proven 3.125 Gbps serial transceivers, immersed Power PC processors and high-density, high performance FPGA fabric, SONET designers can now benefit from the low-cost and low-risk advantages of programmable systems."
