Smoking Around the World
From the weird to the insane
August 28, 2007
11:35 AM -- Some smokin' news from the U.K.'s Daily Mail:
An iron-lunged pensioner has celebrated her 100th birthday by lighting up her 170,000th cigerette [sic] from a candle on her birthday cake...
The weird thing is, she counted them.
The former launderette worker said she started the habit in 1914 - just weeks after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on June 28 - which sparked the First World War.
Interesting syntax there. They seem to be blaming WWI on her smoking habit. A novel theory -- but one in keeping with the current Zeitgeist, to judge by this story from the same source:
A Swedish woman has been banned from smoking in her own back garden because her neighbour is allergic to cigarette smoke.
The cigarette row has rocked the city of Akarpin in southern Sweden, where the Environment Court banned Ingela Olofsson from smoking in her yard after hearing that her neighbour - Michael Berggren, a lawyer [now, there's a surprise] - has to wear an oxygen mask when walking from the house to the car.
"This is insane," Olofsson said.
No, dear. It's just a lawyer.
