PENNINGTON, N.J. -- PD-LD Inc. has recently demonstrated a new and exclusive technology for greatly improving characteristics of high power laser diodes by using proprietary Volume Bragg Gratings [VBG™] to lock the emission wavelength of high power multimode laser diodes. The following table illustrates the improvements in emission characteristics by comparing VBG™ locked with typical commercial high power laser diodes:

Table 1:

0.3 nm/C

<0.5 nm

+/- 0.5 nm

0.01 nm/C

The above comparison shows quite clearly that VBG™ wave locking transforms the multimode high power laser diodes into practically single frequency emitters with precisely defined lc and a very low sensitivity to temperature changes. This, no doubt, will have important consequences for many applications, such as:

  • High-efficiency pumping solid state lasers

  • Extension of diode pumping to new kinds of lasers (e.g. disc lasers), where precisely defined pumping wavelength is required

  • Extension of the life time of the diode pump bars by reducing or even eliminating the so called “red shift” caused by the aging of laser diodes

  • Sensing, chemical analysis and possibly some medical applications, where the control of the central wavelength is important

  • Spin-exchange optical pumping for hyperpolarizing the noble gases

VBG™ wave locking is applicable to any wavelength and power level. The method can be used with single emitters as well as with linear arrays and multi-array stacks of high power laser diodes.

Dr. Vladimir S. Ban, CEO says “this is a new direction for our company that we feel will truly make a difference in high power laser yields and improve the efficiency of DPSS high power laser systems.”
