AMSTERDAM -- Entone, Inc., the IPTV connected home company, will use IBC 2008 to demonstrate how advanced consumer services such as multi-room HD/SD television, whole-home DVR and media sharing over a home network can become a mass-market proposition for European IPTV operators. Entone is introducing its multi-stream Janus™ IP Video Gateway on Stand IP-333, a product that significantly reduces the cost of deploying sophisticated whole-home IPTV services. Janus enables multi-room television and DVR from a single gateway device, utilizes any popular home networking technology and supports the customer self-installation model that is critical to European operators.

Janus has been designed specifically for the European IPTV market in consultation with operators and is currently being deployed by a number of service providers. It is Europe’s first multi-stream IP video gateway. Visitors to IBC can see how this product revolutionizes the economics of whole-home IPTV services and find out more about its consumer and operator benefits. These include:

  • Enabling multi-room television for IPTV operators using a single gateway rather than a collection of networked set-top boxes.

  • Supporting simultaneous decoding of HDTV and standard-definition streams to enable the ‘big screen’ HD experience in the living room at the same time that other family members are watching SD programming.

  • Supporting media sharing within a home network for easy access to images, music and videos from anywhere in the home.

  • Enabling IPTV subscribers to independently record, pause, play, rewind, and fast-forward live or recorded programming from any TV in their home network.

  • Supporting DVB-T reception for service providers wishing to offer an IPTV/DTT hybrid service.

  • Providing multiple storage capacity options for whole-home DVR.

  • Enabling IPTV operators to utilise existing in-home wiring infrastructure for home networking where appropriate.

“In developing the Janus gateway, we worked closely with the European operators to make sure we addressed their key needs and challenges,” states Mark Evensen, VP of Product Development at Entone. “We heard loud and clear that the operators needed a solution for multiple television homes without requiring a home full of set-top boxes. We also understood the need for hybrid DVB-T/IP support, and the ability for customers to self-install the solution in their homes.”
