HANOVER, Germany -- A new Ethernet aggregation unit enhances the switching and routing functions of KEYMILE's multi-service access platform UMUX. The unit enables direct connection of Ethernet networks and other UMUX Ethernet interfaces to the PDH/SDH network. In addition, it consolidates Ethernet traffic in several TDM channels, thus offering a reliable way to provide advanced Ethernet and traditional PDH/SDH services out of one network element.

KEYMILE, one of the leading providers of Next Generation data transmission systems, has extended its UMUX platform's Ethernet functions significantly. UMUX is a multi-service access platform that provides a variety of services for public and private network operators. The proliferation of Ethernet services presents many network operators with the challenge of having to upgrade their infrastructures with Ethernet interfaces; while at the same time, they want to continue using the robust and proven PDH/SDH services. One solution is to transmit Ethernet services via the existing TDM infrastructures; to that end, the new Ethernet aggregation unit allows UMUX to aggregate Ethernet data traffic using layer 2 and layer 3 functionality for transmission on TDM networks. This way, UMUX allows network operators to use extensive Ethernet services and traditional PDH/SDH services in a single network element simultaneously.

The new unit offers switching functions for Ethernet traffic from other UMUX units or from each of its front ports. It enables several independent VLAN-aware switch instances and the creation of separate layer 2 networks, as well as the distribution of data traffic into several TDM or SDH channels. The Ethernet unit also consolidates the Ethernet services, provided with UMUX units, and serves simultaneously as a gateway for these services towards the network. It is compatible with all UMUX-PDH units that supply Ethernet services. KEYMILE's network management system, UNEM, looks after the administration. UNEM provides all the functions required for operating and carrying out maintenance on complex UMUX networks.

The most important applications for the new unit are in networks requiring data transmission of Ethernet services via reliable PDH/SDH networks. This is for example required for energy suppliers, railway companies and Public Telecom operators aiming to reuse their TDM network.

The Ethernet aggregation unit will be available from September 2009.
