360networks Opens Bermuda Hub

St. DAVID'S, Bermuda -- 360networks and its subsidiary TeleBermuda International unveiled today their new US $22 million cable landing station in St David's, Bermuda. The new station will serve as a central hub for the 360americas fiber optic network, connecting Bermuda, South America and the United States. Upon scheduled completion in early 2002, 360americas will span 29,000 kilometers (18,000 miles) and provide total system capacity of 1.28 terabits per second. The network will link the United States, Bermuda, Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela.

The 15,000 square foot cable landing station in St. David's houses network switching equipment, office space, back-up power and utilities. The new site also features fully secure co-location space where international telecommunications carriers and data communications companies can connect their network servers and other equipment to 360networks' long-haul network.

The Hon. Jennifer M. Smith, J.P., M.P., Premier of Bermuda, officially opened the cable landing station and praised both 360networks and TeleBermuda for their commitment to Bermuda and the benefits the cable landing station will provide. "Bermuda's role as part of 360networks' global network began just over three years ago when a license was issued to TeleBermuda International to provide competitive telecommunication services in Bermuda. With the completion of TeleBermuda's first fiber optic cable from Bermuda to the United States, the groundwork was laid for Bermuda to become a hub of international carrier traffic. Today, we celebrate the opening of the new Bermuda-based cable landing station and the completion of 360americas between Bermuda and Brazil."
