CHELMSFORD, Mass., and LONDON -- Sycamore Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: SCMR), a leader in intelligent optical networking, and Vodafone Limited, the world’s largest mobile telecommunications company, today announced a multi-year agreement valued at up to approximately $40 million targeting purchases in the UK of Sycamore’s intelligent optical switching and transport products and services.Under the terms of the agreement, Sycamore will supply Vodafone with the SN 16000 intelligent optical core switch, SN 3000 optical access switch, SN 8000 intelligent optical transport platform and optical network management system, SILVXÔ, for deployment within its UK network. Sycamore’s equipment was chosen because of its sophisticated software architecture and ability to allow for rapid provisioning of bandwidth.

“The value of introducing optical switching into our network is that it allows us to reduce the cost of offering services while increasing our ability to rapidly deploy additional bandwidth to support our growing network traffic,” said Mike Pinches, Managing Director Networks at Vodafone UK. “The inherent flexibility and scalability of Sycamore’s intelligent mesh architecture is of paramount importance to a rapidly-growing network such as Vodafone’s and will be key to building our next generation network.”
