12:45 PM -- I did it. I bought an Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone.
The actual purchase came after much consternation and second guessing. Do I really want to be stuck on the Edge network for the next two years? Do I want to be stuck with an expensive piece of plastic when all my friends are carrying around the next big thing? Or when Apple decides to upgrade the device in the next six months?
The answer to all those questions was, "No, not really."
But I did it anyway, since I'm a glutton for punishment.
Also because my new apartment is the one place in the entire greater New York area in which my older provider -- Verizon Wireless -- gets no coverage whatsoever.
(When I told Verizon Wireless that I would be changing providers because I moved to a new place and couldn't make calls, the customer service rep was stunned. "Where did you move to, a cave?" she asked.)
Armed with the knowledge that AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) and Sprint Wireless (NYSE: PCS) both received coverage in my apartment, as well as the knowledge that Sprint doesn't work anywhere else, I settled on AT&T as my new service provider. And once that decision was made, it was not too difficult to guess that I would be ponying up for an iPhone.
My first impressions of the device are favorable, but not entirely mind blowing. While I do like the iPhone's functionality, it's taken me some time to adjust to the touch screen, especially when entering all of my contacts into the new phone.
Anyway, I'll have to play with it some more before deciding that I really regret the purchase. Until then, count me as a fan.
