Genband CTO Leaves for Consulting Gig

Genband CTO Fred Kemmerer has left the vendor to start his own consulting practice, Light Reading learned on Monday.

Kemmerer's LinkedIn profile indicates that he left the unified communications company sometime earlier this year to become president and CEO of Strategic Options Business Consulting. He was with Genband Inc. for six years and also served as the Chairman of the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) 's Technology and Operations (TOPS) Council since 2012. (See Genband Exec to Head ATIS Tech Council.)

Genband didn't respond to a questions about when Kemmerer left the company and who would be filling the CTO role, but a former employee says he's been gone for a while now. The management team page on Genband's website doesn't currently list anyone as CTO.

We will update this story as soon as we get a reply from Genband about the CTO role.

Genband has had several shakeups to its top-level management ever since CEO Charlie Vogt left the company in June 2013, taking a few executives with him to Harris Broadcast, and turning the reins over to Chairman David Walsh. (See Genband CEO Quits, Joins Harris Broadcast, What's Next for Genband? and Pulling the Strings at Genband.)

The vendor has since been working hard to shed its legacy image and build out its mobile and enterprise stories, as well as convince operators that it has a well-paved path to NFV and SDN. Re: CTO details
In my experience, when a company loses a key player and said person isn't replaced relatively quickly there's usually trouble on the horizon.  In the last two instances I saw it occur the problem was with management since the working staff seemed pretty strong.

Re: CTO details
According to CMO Brad Bush, Fred became CTO Emaritus in January of this year and his duties just recently ended. Here's his official comment:

"Fred was CTO emeritus for a while, serving on several boards like TIA.  Those official duties have now ended. We sincerely value Fred's contribution to the company and the industry and thank him for his many years of service to GENBAND.  BG Kumar serves as Chief Product Officer and is responsible for all technology leadership and Paul Pluschkell joined the company earlier this year as Executive Vice President of Cloud Services and Chief Strategy Officer. Paul has been focusing on the Kandy Platform-as-a-Service launch."
