SEOUL -- Samsung Electronics announced today the significant improvements in the specifications for its multimode optical fibers. This move is in line with Samsung¡¯s sustained efforts to reinforce fiber specifications announced earlier this year for conventional single-mode fiber, which resulting achievements have been successfully conveyed to multimode fiber production.

Significant advancements have been made for seven major geometrical specifications of the fiber together with four world records this time. The clad diameter tolerance has been improved by 33% from 125 ¡À 1.5 ¦Ìm to 125 ¡À 1.0 ¦Ìm. The core-clad concentricity error has been reduced by 50% from the previous ¡Ü 3.0 ¦Ìm to ¡Ü 1.5 ¦Ìm. The coating diameter tolerance has been also improved by 50% from 245 ¡À 10 ¦Ìm to 245 ¡À 5 ¦Ìm, which is best-in-class performance.

Furthermore, Samsung established the world-best geometrical specifications in the area of core non-circularity, clad non-circularity, coating non-circularity and coating-clad concentricity error for its fiber. The company has presented ¡Ü 3.0% for core non-circularity, which is 40% better than the current industry standard of ¡Ü 5.0%.

Additionally, the clad non-circularity has been improved from ¡Ü 2.0% to ¡Ü 0.8%, 20% superior to current standard of 1.0% and coating non-circularity has been improved by 50% from ¡Ü 6.0% to ¡Ü 3.0%, which is another world-best specification and 40% better than the present best-in-class specification of ¡Ü 5.0%. The company also improved coating-clad concentricity error by even more than 50% from ¡Ü 12.5 ¦Ìm to ¡Ü 6.0 ¦Ìm,

¡°This announcement once again demonstrates Samsung¡¯s strong will and commitment to quality and ever growing customer¡¯s requirements for more advanced fiber quality.¡± said Byeong-Bok Jeon, Vice President and General Manager of the Samsung Fiberoptics Division.
