SHANGHAI, China -- Riverstone Networks (RSTN.PK) today announced that China Telecom's Shanghai subsidiary, Shanghai Telecom, has selected Riverstone's carrier Ethernet routers to deliver Ethernet access services to its expanding base of enterprise customers over its ATM core infrastructure. Taking advantage of the feature-rich ATM support on Riverstone's RS 3100 Ethernet access routers, Shanghai Telecom plans to significantly grow its revenues with minimal capital expenditure on its proven and robust ATM infrastructure.

Using Riverstone's Ethernet access routers, Shanghai Telecom will be able to fully utilize the untapped capacity of its existing ATM switches to quickly deliver cost-effective, enterprise VPN services without additional ATM investment. The solution will also allow its enterprise customers to contain their IT costs, capitalizing on the ease of connecting their largely Ethernet-based networks to an Ethernet service interface.

"The Riverstone solution delivers everything we need," said Rong Xu, Vice Technical Director, Shanghai Telecom. "Using the RS 3100, we get much higher port density and line rate performance on a pay-as-you-grow basis. In addition, the RS 3100 provides this at a fraction of the cost of adding Ethernet line cards to our ATM switches. Not only does it allow us to cost-effectively grow our services, it provides the reliability and ATM-grade Quality of Service (QoS) that our customers need for their mission-critical data."
