BOULDER, Colo. -- Picolight today announced the immediate availability of extended-reach single mode fiber Gigabit Ethernet transceivers for 40- and 80-kilometer "ZX" applications. The new small form factor pluggable (SFP) transceivers round out Picolight's Extensus(tm) product family, which already supports 10-kilometer Gigabit Ethernet "LX" and 20-kilometer Fibre Channel applications. These products, together with Picolight's existing 850nm multi-mode fiber Accelar(tm) SFP transceivers, form a complete reach-distance solution for optical Ethernet.

Picolight accelerated its entry into the 40- and 80-kilometer optical interconnect market through a partnership with the U.S.-based unit of Sumitomo Electric Industries (SEI). Picolight's new Extensus transceivers use Sumitomo 1310nm and 1550nm distributed feedback (DFB) lasers and are part of a strategic supply relationship through which Sumitomo will also offer products using Picolight's 850nm vertical cavity surface-emitting laser.

"We are very pleased to support our Ethernet customers with ZX reach extension and to have Sumitomo as a partner," said Stan Swirhun, Picolight president and chief executive officer. "This SFP family expansion, combined with our comprehensive offering of short-reach solutions, elevates Picolight to one of the few optical transceiver companies capable of supporting enterprise, campus, access and metro applications with high reliability and quality."

"Picolight's use of Sumitomo optics in the company's extended-reach ZX products guarantees Picolight's customers both high performance and outstanding reliability," said Kevin Green, chief operating officer of Sumitomo's U.S. based ExceLight arm. "Our track record in long-reach fiber-optics subassemblies makes us an ideal partner for Picolight, and enables Picolight to deliver a variety of advanced capabilities."
