Photline Unveils Powerful Modulators

Company's NIR-LN series LiNb03 modulators withstand 1 W of launch power at 1064 nm

BESANÇON, France -- Photline Technologies has successfully operated with no performance degradationtheir NIR–MX–LN–03 intensity modulators with launch power in excess of 1 watt atthe 1064 nm wavelength. This demonstration represents a tenfold improvement inthe maximum launch power compared to the state of the art pigtailed intensitymodulators available on the market.

Multiple exposures of NIR-MX-LN modulators to levels of input power between0.5 W to1 W for tens of hours reveal no change in the modulator fiber to fiberinsertion loss (i.e. 4 dB typical) or the generation of second harmonic light in thedevice. Photline Engineering Department is currently conducting long termmeasurements to confirm this performance breakthrough of their novel modulatordesign, in both CW and pulsed modes of operation.NIR-LN series modulators are a family of LiNb03 modulators especially designed byPhotline Technologies for transmission of light in the 1000 nm region. They offerperformance and operating bandwidth greater than 10 GHz, comparable to theircounterparts used in telecommunications.

The reported tests open very good prospects for a number of emerging applicationssuch as LIDAR based sensing or free space data transmission that requiremodulation of high power of light in the 1000 nm region.
