China Mobile has awarded a number of 100G optical equipment deals to three vendors as it bolsters its transport network to support its enormous 4G radio access network rollout.

Three vendors have landed deals: Alcatel Shanghai Bell Co. Ltd. , Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. , and ZTE Corp. (Shenzhen: 000063; Hong Kong: 0763).

Bao Zhichung, international director of ZTE bearer networks, said the contract to deploy 20,000 km in OTN equipment across China's western provinces was the company's biggest 100G deal. He said the rollout was likely to be completed by year's end.

Huawei will supply the East China portion of the contract, while Alcatel Shanghai Bell landed the deal for Northeast China following its framework agreement announced in March. (See Alcatel-Lucent Soars on $1B China Deal.)

China Mobile is halfway through the construction of the world's largest 4G network, with 500,000 LTE-TDD base stations forecast to be installed by the end of 2014. (See China Holds Key to LTE TDD.)

Re: tender
Yes viper99, that's correct. It is the same contract, although this is the first we have carried it at LR.

At the same time
@Robert: At the same time when China Mobile is upgrading its 500,000 cell sites to LTE in China, it is doing exactly the same in its only foreign operation in Pakistan with a scale that is 100 times smaller. A little more than 5,000 cell sites.
