SpiderCloud Eyes LTE Enterprise Small Cells in 2014

SpiderCloud is expecting LTE small cells to be deployed with enterprise users in 2014, and says it is currently engaged in a number of 4G trials.

Ronny Haraldsvik, the chief marketing officer at SpiderCloud Wireless , tells Light Reading that its boxes are now in six trials with carriers, which in turn would use the small cells to provide services to their enterprise customers. He expects Spidercloud's SCRN-310 product, which can support LTE and 3G on separate bands, will be commercially delivered in the second or third quarter. "We are using our first-gen LTE Radio Node [the SCRN-210, announced in the Fall of 2012] for the trials… but the 310 will be the most likely product used for commercial LTE/3G deployments," Haraldsvik notes.

The 210 has the same LTE capability as the 310, he adds, so can be used for 4G-only deployments.

The vendor currently has an announced deal with Vodafone Netherlands . Haraldsvik notes that operators are often cautious about publicly revealing vendor deals. (See Vodafone Deploys SpiderCloud's Small Cells.)

Nonetheless, Haraldsvik believes that "this is the year" for enterprise small cells. These SpiderCloud units are distinct from public access small cells because they can use the Ethernet connections already installed at business premises and so are less likely to require new backhaul connections. Spidercloud says it already has 3G small cells deployed Spidercloud says it already has 3G small cells deployed BTW. Could we see growth in 3G/4G enterprise small cells BEFORE the public access small cells take off?

Certainly cheaper than deploying a DAS for instance....

Re: Spidercloud says it already has 3G small cells deployed Enterprise small cells won't displace DAS for large venues in the near future due multiple reasons such as follows:
  • DAS provides a neutral host platform supporting multiple carriers, frequency bands and technologies
  • For venues that are 100,000 square feet or larger DAS is a much more effective solution
  • As is well noted most enterprise small cells support either 3G, 3G and 4G, and 3G, 4G, and WiFi in the future on a wide scale basis; DAS supports all the above and has been supporting for years

What we will see is small cells feeding DAS to enable addressing nuetral host capabilities for instance that can provide In-building coverage to multiple carriers such as T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T.

We'll see how this plays out over the next couple of years and until then DAS isn't going anywhere.

Re: Spidercloud says it already has 3G small cells deployed In the latest set of documents released by the SmallCell Forum, there's an action item addressig the issue of neutral host or shared RAN small cells. The question at this point is less technical but more of a deployment and cost business issue.

Re: Spidercloud says it already has 3G small cells deployed Dan: In response to 'drymarchon', small cell vendors would not exist if DAS was the be-all, end-all solution for in-building coverage. Operators and in-building SIs just want a solution that works. "Multi-operator" is the go-to "trump card" for DAS-only vendors. Shared DAS is beacuse single-operator DAS is too costly and the busienss case does not hunt. As recently as the Small Cell Forum in Dallas in Dec'13 and also at the LTE Americas in Dallas in November, several operators (AT&T as well) publicly stated that DAS is too expensive and that was the reason for a shared DA. The argument that a DAS must support 4 operators is a thing of the past. Enterprises want coverage and capacity and they are willing to go to the oeprator who can best serve them. A scalable small cell system can be be in place within 30 days of the first conversation with an operator and the enterprise customer and the business case is there for scalable small cell coverage from 50k Sq Feet to millions of Sq Feet - wherever there's a LAN. DAS will indeed be around for the next few years...we agree. After that, who knows.

Re: Spidercloud says it already has 3G small cells deployed Yeah I don't see DAS disappearing for large scale multi-carrier public deployments too soon, look at that Transit Wireless deployment, if they were starting that from now they might -- might -- be able to look at small cells now. But that's a different kettle of fish to a typical enterprise deployment...
