Singapore's Landmark Week
3:10 AM Milestones for the island state's mobile data sector
June 22, 2011
3:10 AM -- It's a big week for mobile broadband in Singapore, which is also hosting the CommunicAsia industry event.
On Tuesday MobileOne Ltd. (M1) (Singapore: MONE) launched what it says is Southeast Asia's first commercial Long Term Evolution (LTE) services, targeted initially at existing enterprise customers in key business districts, where users can hook up to the high-speed service using a dongle. National LTE coverage is planned for the first quarter of 2012. (See M1 Launches LTE Service and M1 to Deploy LTE With Huawei.)
M1's rivals, Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. (SingTel) (OTC: SGTJY) and StarHub , both plan to launch their LTE services before the end of 2011.
In addition, the island state welcomes BlackBerry 's new tablet, the PlayBook, from Thursday (June 23). All three mobile operators will sell the Wi-Fi-enabled device.
RIM has some catching up to do, though -- Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL)'s iPad has been available since July 2010, while the iPad 2 reached Singapore in April this year.
