6:10 AM -- Telefónica SA (NYSE: TEF) is poised to launch a residential femtocell service in Spain, according to local press reports, which means indoor-coverage-deprived Spaniards could soon have something more to celebrate.
The Spanish operator will launch the Mi Cobertura Móvil service with femtocell access points from Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. , according to the report on the Bandaancha.eu site. The femto service will require an ADSL connection only from Telefónica with a minimum speed of 3 Mbit/s. Customers will be able to rent the femtos for €9 (US$11.4) per month.
Telefónica will also use femto access points from Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU) and has plans to launch in other countries as well, according to an industry source. (See Vodafone, O2 Test Femtocells and Telefónica O2 Preps New Femto Trial.)
Telefónica will have the second femto service in Spain following Vodafone España S.A. 's recent launch of an enterprise femto offering. (See Femto Watch: Vodafone Means Business in Spain.)
