China Mobile Adds 9M 4G Customers in August

China Mobile revealed Monday that it added more than 9 million new customers in August for its recently launched 4G LTE service.

The operator announced its customer data for August Monday morning. It now claims to have nearly 30 million customers on its LTE service, up from just over 20 million in July.

To put that in context, that would be roughly equivalent to the entire population of New Jersey signing up for 4G service in a single month.

China Mobile Ltd. (NYSE: CHL) launched the 4G service in December 2013. It is using the home-grown LTE TDD specification for its initial deployment, rather than the more commonly used FDD specification (See Defining 4G: What the Heck Is LTE TDD?)

The rapid growth will likely be good news for China Mobile's network providers, Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. , Nokia Networks and ZTE Corp. (Shenzhen: 000063; Hong Kong: 0763). (See Nokia Networks Boasts China Mobile 4G Deals and ZTE Rides China 4G Rollout to Higher Profits .)

The 4G service was the first on the mainland to offer Chinese consumers the Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) iPhone. (See Apple-China Mobile Deal: A Boost for LTE TDD in 2014.)
