YAKUM, Israel -- Metalink Ltd. (NASDAQ: MTLK - News), a provider of high performance wireline and wireless broadband communication silicon solutions, today announced the commercial availability of a new generation of its VDSLPlus(TM) Very High bit rate Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL) transceivers with the ability to transmit both upstream and downstream at breakthrough rates of 100 Mbps.

Designed with the special performance requirements of Japanese carriers in mind, Metalink's VDSLPlus(TM) chipset provides unmatched performance of symmetric 100 Mbps for more than 200 meters.

"We have demonstrated our VDSLPlus(TM) technology to leading system vendors and carriers in Korea and Japan, and systems based on our 100Mbps symmetric VDSL chipsets are currently in the advanced development phase by leading Japanese and Korean vendors," said Tzvi Shukhman, Metalink's Chairman and CEO.

Metalink's wide bandwidth VDSLPlus(TM) technology supports record transmission speed in a real noise environment while maintaining spectral compatibility with existing services such as ISDN, ADSL, and ADSL2+ among others. The low power consumption and small die size of the VDSLPlus(TM) chipset make it the perfect choice for carriers looking for a cost-effective fiber extension solution.

Metalink's 100 Mbps Symmetric VDSLPlus(TM) provides fiber-like speeds over existing copper infrastructure. Given the prohibitive last-mile deployment costs of all-optical networks, VDSLPlus(TM) is an ideal fiber extension, which provides a cost-effective solution for bridging the last 200 meters to the subscriber.

Teresa Mastrangelo, Principal Analyst at broadbandtrends.com, commented, "This unique demonstration of 100 Mbps symmetric transmission over 200 meters of standard (26 AWG) single twisted pair is proving once again the ability of current copper infrastructure to offer fiber speeds, helping carriers in their transition to triple-play service providers. The perpetual development in xDSL technology and its ability to evolve to new record heights is yet another validation of the important role copper infrastructure will continue to play in future broadband services deployment."

"We are proud to lead the industry once again with a high-performance chipset. VDSLPlus is the ultimate fiber extension - a cost-effective solution for providing fiber-speed services using the existing copper infrastructure. We believe this latest-generation product of our field-proven VDSL product line will be widely adopted by operators and will become an important driver of our future growth," concluded Mr. Shukhman.
