Marvell doubles the density of 10-Gigabit Ethernet ports with the dual 10-GbE XAUI SerDes

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Marvell(R) (Nasdaq:MRVL), a technology leader in the development of extreme broadband communications solutions, today announced the world's first dual 10 Gigabit Ethernet XAUI serializer/deserializer (SERDES) physical layer device. The new Alaska(R) X device (88X2080) enables XAUI redundancy and repeater applications while delivering unprecedented density, performance and power.The Alaska X device features two 10 Gigabit Media Independent Interfaces (XGMII) and two 10 Gigabit Attachment Unit Interfaces (XAUI) that are fully compliant to the IEEE 802.3ae specification. The 88X2080 device is the industry's first and only 10 Gigabit Ethernet compliant dual XAUI to dual XGMII converter IC. In addition to 10 Gigabit Ethernet, the device supports 10 Gigabit Fiber Channel (10 GFC) applications.The Alaska X device simplifies the design of high-reliability, fault-tolerant switching systems by providing highly flexible redundancy features. The transceiver's redundancy features allow `on-the- fly' connection of the system XGMII interface to a primary XAUI interface or a redundant XAUI interface for fail-over protection. This capability eliminates the need for additional expensive components to do the switchover, resulting in simplified designs and significant cost savings. The Alaska X device is also optimized for XAUI re-timer and repeater applications such as signal clean-up in IEEE 10GBASE-LX4 WWDM optical modules, enabling streamlined single-chip repeater solutions. The two XAUI interfaces of the device can be connected to each other to implement full bi-directional XAUI-to-XAUI transceiver for repeater applications."Marvell has consistently demonstrated technology leadership with its Alaska X family of 10 Gigabit physical layer devices," said Tony Moretti, vice president of Advanced Optoelectronic Development at Molex, Inc.
