MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- Kestrel Solutions, Inc., an innovator in metro optical networking, today announced the publication of its waveform specification for Optical Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM). The scope of the Optical FDM interface specification describes the physical layer properties of the high-speed optical signal that Kestrel Solutions uses in its patent-pending transmission equipment. Kestrel Solutions will be selecting qualified independent manufacturers to develop Optical FDM equipment that interoperates with Kestrel Solutions products.

Optical FDM provides the means to efficiently combine low-speed optical tributaries onto a high-speed optical backbone. It allows service-providers to multiplex synchronous and asynchronous services onto a single wavelength. In addition, low-speed SONET/SDH signals as well as other optical signals -- e.g. asynchronous protocols, Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel -- can be efficiently combined onto a single wavelength.

Norm Swenson, Chief Technical Officer of Kestrel Solutions, said, "Optical FDM has the inherent capability to transport multiple protocols and data rates on a single wavelength output. All signals are carried transparently, eliminating concerns over interoperability, multiple restoration domains, or timing mismatches."
