GLASGOW, U.K. -- A key addition to the Kamelian product range was announced today by Amphotonix, a leading supplier of Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (SOAs) and Superluminescent Diodes (SLDs).

A range of reflective SOAs (R-SOAs) has been introduced in direct response to customer demand for a high-performance, low-cost source for next generation, high-capacity, optical fibre based access networks (so called FTTX). The current generation of FTTX networks are based on time division multiplexing where bandwidth is shared between subscribers. The R-SOA enables a new generation of networks where the full bandwidth can be economically provided to each subscriber.

The R-SOA utilises a high reflectivity coating on one facet, and an ultra low reflectivity coating on the other facet to produce a highly versatile reflective gain medium. The gain medium capitalises on the exceptionally low polarization dependant gain (PDG), noise figure, and drive current performance of the well established Kamelian range of SOAs. This product is suitable for use as a directly modulated 'colourless source' in wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) applications at up to 1.25Gbps; and also as a wideband gain element in external cavity tunable lasers. The R-SOA is offered with a range of gains and output powers and is available as either fully tested 'chip on carrier', or packaged in the industry standard, single mode fibre pigtailed TO-can.
