SAN JOSE, Calif. -- JDSU (NASDAQ: JDSU - News; TSX: JDU - News) today introduced the industry's first all-in-one portable tester for 40/43G networks. Combining 40/43G optical and electrical interfaces with jitter and wander in JDSU's ONT-506 and ONT-512 testers, the solution was developed to help address the bandwidth demands being placed on metro and long haul networks by the rapid deployment of triple-play services.

The 40/43G module for the ONT-506 and ONT-512 supports the research and development, service verification testing and production needs of network equipment manufacturers, as well as the equipment verification, installation and maintenance requirements of service providers. The new module will be introduced at OFC/NFOEC 2006 in Anaheim, California, March 5-10 (booth 2323) and CeBIT 2006 in Hannover, Germany, March 9-16 (booth B20, Hall 13).

While 40G (OC-768/STM-256), presently the fastest transmission rate for SONET and SDH networks, is still in the early stages of deployment, it is experiencing accelerated growth in core networks to accommodate the widespread introduction of triple-play services. These new, high bit-rate networks create new challenges for equipment vendors by pushing the boundaries of physics and demanding that every network element be designed, installed and tuned with extreme precision. Network operators are also challenged by the need to reduce operating expenses while adding new revenue-generating services, some of which already require optical transport equipment that supports data rates higher than 10G.

"New 40/43G networks will allow manufacturers and service providers to further enhance transport capacity in the optical network, extend distances between systems, and improve flexibility and responsiveness in new high-bandwidth services," said Bernhard Mueller, general manager for JDSU's optical transport Test and Measurement group. "JDSU has a set of solutions based on our heritage of 40G testers that will help network operators and equipment manufacturers meet the challenges associated with the deployment of these high bandwidth networks."
