DUBLIN -- Midway through last year, Intune Technologies announced that it had reduced tunable laser calibration time from days to approximately 1 hour. Now they have slashed this time down to the order of minutes. The Intune SENTOR system can calibrate any of the lasers currently available on the market place in a fully automated environment. The benefits for volume manufacturing are enormous and Intune has already had a very positive response from early product demonstrations with some of its customers. Each tunable laser is unique once it has been manufactured and requires expert calibration. This has been a bottleneck in manufacturing where lasers have been traditionally calibrated over a number of hours using semi-automated methods and highly skilled personnel. Now the demand for 1000’s of these lasers per week is growing and technology to automate and speed up the manufacturing process is much sought after.

Fast calibration means reduced manufacturing costs due to a reduction in the number of lasers that are packaged but not fully tested for tuning. The cost of each package can be as high as four times the laser cost. Lasers which do not meet the required performance and have been packaged, must be discarded along with the package. Fast calibration will also deliver a greater volume of reliability data for the users of tunable devices. This will result in a higher level of confidence and more widespread deployment of these lasers. Networks will ultimately benefit in reliability, flexibility and scalability by using the tunable laser function deep in the heart of the system.
