NEW YORK -- While 10-Gbit/s systems still dominate optical transmission system shipments, growing demand for bandwidth is spurring network operators to accelerate their timetables for migrating to 40G and 100G technologies, with 40G capabilities now featured in most RFQs from large carriers, according to the latest report from Heavy Reading Insider (www.lightreading.com/insider), a paid research service of TechWeb's Light Reading (www.lightreading.com).

"Telecom carriers around the world are reviewing the capabilities of their networks to cope with continually rising demand for bandwidth," notes Danny Dicks, research editor for Heavy Reading Insider and author of the report. Dozens of operators around the world have already begun to deploy 40G technology in their transport networks, and several are trialing 100G systems, Dicks reports. "Many of the telecom optical systems vendors have 40G solutions – and many stress the ability of their systems to reuse existing fiber infrastructure, and to provide extra capacity without excessive additional costs," he adds. "Many operators would move to 100G systems immediately, bypassing 40G transport, if solutions were commercially available that could run over existing fiber, and if capacity on the 100G channels could be efficiently filled through grooming and multiplexing."
