NEW YORK -- While 10-Gbit/s systems still dominate optical transmission system shipments, growing demand for bandwidth is spurring network operators to accelerate their timetables for migrating to 40G and 100G technologies, with 40G capabilities now featured in most RFQs from large carriers, according to the latest report from Heavy Reading Insider (www.lightreading.com/insider), a paid research service of TechWeb's Light Reading (www.lightreading.com).

Optical Transport: 40G/100G Interest Shifts Into Overdrive analyzes current and projected deployment of optical transport technologies by network operators, focusing on the anticipated surge in demand for 40G and 100G systems. The report examines the market dynamics that are driving demand for high-speed transport and explores the technologies that provide compatibility with installed fiber infrastructure in different parts of the network. It also sets out the likely timetables for deployment of 40G and 100G systems, analyzes the impact of emerging standards on market development, and evaluates moves to integrate IP and optical networks more closely. The report profiles 13 leading vendors of 40G and 100G optical transport systems, comparing their approaches from technical and market-focus perspectives.

"Telecom carriers around the world are reviewing the capabilities of their networks to cope with continually rising demand for bandwidth," notes Danny Dicks, research editor for Heavy Reading Insider and author of the report. "At the same time, many carriers are converging their networks for reasons of plant efficiency. As a result, capacity needs at the optical transport level are pushing well beyond the capabilities of 10-Gbit/s channels."

Dozens of operators around the world have already begun to deploy 40G technology in their transport networks, and several are trialing 100G systems, Dicks reports. "Many of the telecom optical systems vendors have 40G solutions – and many stress the ability of their systems to reuse existing fiber infrastructure, and to provide extra capacity without excessive additional costs," he adds. "Many operators would move to 100G systems immediately, bypassing 40G transport, if solutions were commercially available that could run over existing fiber, and if capacity on the 100G channels could be efficiently filled through grooming and multiplexing."

Key findings of Optical Transport: 40G/100G Interest Shifts Into Overdrive the following:

  • Demand for 40G and 100G optical transport is driven by requirements of consumer and business applications, as well as telcos' network convergence activities.

  • High-speed router interconnection in North America drove the 40G systems market in 2009, and 40GE and 100GE standards work looks set to reinforce demand in 2010.

  • Vendors report that telcos expect 40G/100G support in future optical transport RFQs/RFPs.

  • DP-QPSK modulation and coherent receivers will dominate 100G long-haul applications, but multiple technologies will be used elsewhere in the network.

  • Network operators expect vendors to enable tighter integration of IP and optical transport networks.
