Corning to supply almost 70% of optical fiber for Guangdong Unicom provincial network buildout

CORNING, N.Y. -- Corning Incorporated (NYSE:GLW - News), a world-leading supplier of optical fiber, announced today that Guangdong Unicom, a China Unicom regional operator, has selected Corning® SMF-28® optical fiber for China Unicom's first regional and provincial network in the Guangdong province. Corning will supply more than 140,000 kilometers of SMF-28 fiber - almost 70% of the total fiber in the project, which will extend more than 7,000 route kilometers throughout the Guangdong province.The Guangdong network, part of China Unicom's continued nationwide network build, will connect the province's largest cities, including Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai. China Unicom, one of the largest network operators in China, is building a 150,000-kilometer national network providing points of presence in all major Chinese cities. "Provincial network access is critical to China's ongoing success in the global marketplace and the development of this infrastructure is an ongoing priority in China," said Simon MacKinnon, president, Corning China.
