SALT LAKE CITY -- CenturyLink, Inc. (NYSE: CTL), a leading provider of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) broadband services for consumers, businesses and education in Utah, has committed to bring 1 Gbps speeds to approximately 100,000 residential customers in the next 12 months in a number of locations ranging from Logan to St. George, providing customers with some of the fastest upload and download Internet speeds in the U.S.

CenturyLink’s February 2014 launch of 1 Gbps service to 2,500 Salt Lake City businesses in multi-tenant buildings has now grown to more than 11,500 business locations throughout the state, including the Wasatch Front. In addition, CenturyLink recently announced that its gigabit service is helping the Utah Education and Telehealth Network (UETN) create a network capable of carrying more than a full terabit of combined bandwidth across 1,412 schools and educational locations across the state, making Utah one of the most connected education systems and connected states in the nation.

“We are pleased to be a gigabit leader in Utah, offering gigabit speeds to customers since early 2014,” said Jeremy Ferkin, CenturyLink vice president of Utah operations. “We are delivering on our promise to be the next-generation technology provider to our Salt Lake City customers and will continue to add to the growing list of gigabit-enabled residences and businesses.”

“It is tremendous to have a company like CenturyLink making this kind of investment in Utah, particularly Salt Lake City,” said Jeff Edwards, president and chief executive officer of the Economic Development Corporation of Utah. “Having this world-class network infrastructure here helps us tell the story of Utah and is instrumental in helping residents and businesses thrive.”

CenturyLink is using fiber-to-the-premises technology to provide speeds up to 1 Gbps, equivalent to 1,000 Mbps, allowing users to stream high-definition video content with little to no delays and download movies, songs and TV shows in seconds. Residential customers who have multiple devices connected to one Internet connection in the home will still have more than enough capacity and speed to support other uses of broadband such as online gaming and home automation systems.
