McLean, Va. -- Northern Virginia based Synergy Telecommunications Corporation (Syntelco) responded quickly to a request from Qwest Communications Friday, September 14 to provide restoration of communications services for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in New York City. As a result of the tragic events in New York City last week, voice, data and video communications services have been interrupted in many Manhattan area locations. After attempting to have their service restored from other major carriers, FEMA turned to Qwest for a solution. When it was realized on Friday afternoon that AT&T could not provide the local service to connect 60 Hudson Street telecom hub to FEMA’s 26 Federal Plaza offices, Qwest decided to turn to a laser communication system and contacted Syntelco for assistance. By late Friday, Syntelco’s President, Chuck Woods, had coordinated the loan of Free-Space Optics (FSO) equipment from their customer, PSINet. Bruce Grammer, Syntelco CTO, assisted by Chuck Stratton completed the staging of related equipment and installation assets in Virginia, left Syntelco offices in Northern Virginia at 2:00 a.m. and arrived in NYC at 6:30 a.m. After receiving assistance from a FEMA representative in crossing security barricades surrounding the site, they were able to begin installation services at 10:00 a.m. Working in close coordination with Qwest management, account, operations and technical personnel, Syntelco established FSO transmission by 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. Routing of the circuits within 60 Hudson Street was accomplished by 7:30 p.m. and the customer accepted service by 8:30 p.m. The link is capable of supporting up to OC3 bandwidth. In addition, fiber to copper transition equipment and M1:3 multiplex equipment were used to accommodate the services required by FEMA, which included two T1 lines. All in just a day’s work at Syntelco. Synergy Telecommunications Corp. (Syntelco)
