MURRAY HILL, N.J. -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) today introduced its smallest base station for CDMA450 service providers that can help improve network coverage and capacity and reduce operating and capital expenses. Sky Link, a telecommunications company established to develop a nationwide CDMA450 network in Russia, will deploy the new Lucent CDMA450 Modular Cell 4.0 Compact as part of its network expansion projects in Moscow, Moscow region and St. Petersburg and Leningrad region also announced today.

The Lucent CDMA450 Modular Cell 4.0 Compact is a cost-effective base station in a smaller, lighter footprint that does not sacrifice capacity. Thirty percent smaller and 100 pounds lighter than previous CDMA450 base stations from Lucent, it can be deployed in urban, suburban, rural and in-building environments. Available in indoor and outdoor configurations, it can be deployed anywhere such as in a closet or basement, or on a rooftop.

"Lucent is committed to helping CDMA450 service providers succeed in a very competitive marketplace," said Mike Iandolo, president of Mobility Access Solutions for Lucent Technologies. "The new CDMA450 Modular Cell 4.0 Compact, developed using our common base station platform, can help CDMA450 service providers improve customer satisfaction and network coverage via its in-building capabilities, enable the most advanced 3G mobile voice and data services and reduce operating and capital expenditures."

The Lucent Modular Cell 4.0 Compact supports third-generation (3G) CDMA2000 1X and 1xEV-DO technology. It will support CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A in the future. It also helps service providers optimize their transport networks via the support of IP backhaul technology, which reduces the number of "T1s" used for transporting voice and data traffic between base stations and Mobile Switching Centers (MSCs) while also increasing the capacity of the MSC and reducing the carrier's operational expenses. The product also offers RF (radio frequency) Antenna Test and Close Loop Gain Control (CLGC) options, which can improve network performance and reduce maintenance costs.
