WALTHAM, Mass. -- Ipanema Technologies, a leader in application traffic management systems for wide area networks (WANs), today announced that it has enhanced its automatic bandwidth tracking capabilities for its Business Network Optimization Solution.

The latest version of its software, which runs on its hardware components, the ip|engines, contains enhanced capabilities designed to enable the system to adapt more rapidly to changing network conditions that can affect critical application performance.

This bandwidth tracking technology uses the Ipanema system’s understanding of the whole network and per-direction congestion detection mechanisms to evaluate the optimum throughput rates for data in any direction in a meshed network using the actual traffic generated by the sites. This congestion detection is coupled to Ipanema’s optimization technology that then rapidly alters the balance of traffic flowing in a particular direction to guarantee appropriate bandwidth to pre-defined critical applications such as voice, video or other key applications.

The enhancements to the system enable improved protection of UDP-based critical application flows such as voice and video, which are typically most affected by dynamic bandwidth change, while the system determines the new throughput capacity available. This facility to manage each possible direction of data flow separately, in real-time, to constantly ensure that the available resources are used in the most business-efficient manner is a cornerstone of the Ipanema system’s application performance guarantee capability.

This ability to adapt to changing network performance is particularly important to enterprises using networks where bandwidth availability can fluctuate, such as Internet VPNs, Frame Relay, ADSL or MPLS networks. By detecting and automatically adapting to these fluctuations, the Ipanema System can guarantee that the enterprises’ critical applications, including ERP, CRM, Voice and video conferencing applications retain access to the network resources they require without the need for complex, static, policy-based QoS rules or bandwidth reservations.

Mark Burton, Ipanema’s director of product management said, “ The Ipanema solution takes a systematic global approach to WAN Optimization. This can be seen in an enterprise running MPLS networks real-time applications, where critical voice or video flows come and go between branch sites without necessarily passing through data centers where the transactional applications are hosted. The Ipanema system’s global visibility and the newly enhanced control methodology allow it to adapt to this dynamic network usage in real-time without operator intervention. This results in guaranteeing both the real-time of voice, video and transactional application performance.”
