HANOVER, Germany -- freenet.de AG will be the first telecommunications service provider in Germany to offer its customers a solution that combines the previously separate voice communications services of mobile phone networks and fixed-line networks. freenet.de has selected Alcatel as its strategic partner, solutions integrator, and systems supplier. The new voice service enables telephony using a Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone at home or in the office over traditional fixed-line networks or broadband networks via IP data transmission protocol, or VoIP. Outside of these areas, the connection is made over the mobile phone network.

With its freenet iPhone service, freenet.de is together with Alcatel making the vision of fixed-line and mobile network convergence a reality. The new service will enable customers to profit from the most attractive combination of mobility, convenience, and affordability ever available. With the solution installed by Alcatel, customers will now be automatically connected by freenet.de through the most appropriate route, either over a VoIP network or a mobile telephone network. This intelligent mobile application combines the availability and quality of fixed-line networks with the mobility and convenience of mobile phones.

"An important aspect of our business philosophy is to continually provide our customers with an unchanging or improved level of service." This innovative product positions freenet.de as one of the most progressive operators on the market, Eckhard Spoerr, CEO of freenet.de AG, explains.

"It is becoming increasingly important for network operators to provide an attractive and broad range of services. We are pleased to have gained in freenet.de one of the most innovative and exciting Internet and telecommunications companies in Germany as a business partner," remarked Alf Henryk Wulf, member of the board of directors at Alcatel SEL AG and Executive Vice President of Marketing and Sales at Alcatel, about the future co-operation between the two companies.
