LAS VEGAS -- Completing its third phase of critical new network advancements addressing the entire network with next generation technology, Extreme Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR - News) today announced its Fourth Generation Networking Silicon System (4GNSS(TM)) for the emerging 10-Gigabit Ethernet core. The 4GNSS architecture readies the network infrastructure for millions of devices by providing the first truly programmable and adaptable core switching architecture to support non-stop network environments. The 4GNSS architecture incorporates a new approach to building scalable core networks by enabling adaptable, non-stop switching with dense, wire-speed 10-Gigabit Ethernet performance.

Today's networks must evolve into tomorrow's networks that will include numerous new applications, requirements and protocols -- many yet unknown. Extreme's 4GNSS architecture includes a new feature, T-Flex, which provides unequaled flexibility to accommodate for these changes. The new T-Flex feature includes ASIC-based programmable packet parsers and editors that allow new innovative features to be deployed without costly hardware upgrades.

Other network changes in the access layer will result in a massive proliferation of network devices requiring a new level of scalability at the core. The new 4GNSS architecture provides unsurpassed levels of scalability granularity for both current Ethernet and IPv4-based environments, as well as seamless migration to next generation networks supporting protocols such as IPv6, MPLS and HVPLS.

"Not only must the next generation Ethernet core be ready for the approaching wave of devices and convergence, it must carry customers far into the future," said Duncan Potter, vice president of marketing for Extreme Networks. "Our 4GNSS architecture with T-Flex is a significant divergence from the common approach to networking infrastructure. It delivers completely new levels of flexibility and meets future scalability requirements of large enterprise and Metro customers. This level of functionality enables users of Extreme networks to be confident that their networks with deliver years of useful life."
