Edgewater Makes VOIP Survivable

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Edgewater Networks, Inc., today announced the availability of VoIP survivability for EdgeMarc Series appliances. Deployed at the customer premise EdgeMarc appliances now provide local call switching in the event of wide area network (WAN) link failures, softswitch failures or during periods of network congestion that result in a loss of connectivity to the softswitch.

"The fact that voice services are unavailable to enterprise customers during periods of WAN link failure or other network-based failures is a significant barrier to sales of hosted PBX services," said Dave Norman, Chief Executive Officer of Edgewater Networks, Inc. "Using Edgewater's VoIP survivability service providers can now remove this objection, accelerate sales and increase the overall value of the service offering to the enterprise."

WAN-based failures have an adverse effect on hosted PBX applications because call control is centrally located in the network and VoIP subscribers connect to the service from remote locations over WAN access links. During network outages or WAN link failures VoIP subscribers are without voice service as IP phones cannot place or receive calls without being connected to the softswitch in the core of the network. Edgewater's VoIP survivability features resolve this problem.

These features include the ability to detect a loss of connectivity to the softswitch, a fallback mode of operation offering station-to-station calling for locally connected subscribers and automatic recovery of call control to the softswitch once connectivity has been restored. In addition to providing VoIP survivability, EdgeMarc appliances effectively resolve NAT/Firewall traversal problems, guarantee high quality voice using prioritization and traffic shaping, monitor voice call quality and provide comprehensive security using a VoIP and data firewall.
