China Picks Nortel's Shasta Box

China Netcom and China Telecom select Nortel's Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Node to provide value-added IP services

BEIJING -- China Netcom and ChinaTelecom have each selected Shasta 5000 Broadband Service Node (BSN)from Nortel Networks to provide a foundation fordelivering value-added broadband IP (Internet Protocol) services toend-users.

China Netcom's Shandong Branch will deploy Nortel Networks Shasta5000 BSNs to build the second phase of its provincial IP-basedMetropolitan Area Network (MAN). This will cover the cities of Jinan,Qingdao, Dezhou, Yantai, Zibo, Rizhao, Jining, Tai'an, Weihai,Zaozhuang, Heze, Dongying and Liaocheng. China Netcom Shandong plansto offer value-added services like secure Internet access, contentdelivery, IP VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) and traffic management toenterprises and other high-end customers.

China Telecom's Shanghai Branch will deploy Shasta 5000 BSNs toprovide enhanced security and traffic management features to enableapplications like e-learning, gaming and remote offices. It will alsoprovide high-speed Internet access to 500,000 new ADSL subscribers inShanghai city."We are honored that China Netcom and China Telecom have onceagain chosen to deploy Shasta 5000 BSNs," said Robert Mao, presidentand chief executive officer, Greater China, Nortel Networks. "Thisfurther testifies to Nortel Networks technology leadership andlong-term commitment to the Chinese market."
