Google is stepping up its Internet of Things game, launching general availability for Cloud IoT Core, a managed service to help enterprises securely connect and manage millions of globally dispersed IoT devices.

Cloud IoT Core works with the broader Google Cloud Platform IoT Service to ingest IoT data and connect it to analytics and machine learning to get actionable insights, according to a post on the Google Cloud Platform Blog Wednesday signed by Indranil Chakraborty, product manager, Google Cloud.

Enterprises are already using Cloud IoT core for applications including smart cities, the sharing economy and seismic research, Chakraborty says.

Google is working with device and application partners to build out its ecosystem. Parters include Cisco, Intel and Sierra Wireless, Chakraborty says.

IoT Core went into public beta in the fall. The new version adds the ability to publish data streams from the IoT Core protocol bridge to multiple Cloud Pub/Sub topics, to simplify deployments, says the Google man. (See Google's Cloud IoT Core Platform Moves to Public Beta.)

Google acquired Xively, a division of LogMein Inc., for $50 million last week, to build IoT strength. (See Google Buys Xively for $50M to Build IoT Muscle.)

IoT is hot for cloud platforms, who are looking to generate revenue by connecting devices to analytics and management. Amazon Web Services Inc. and Microsoft Azure each offer IoT services similar to Google Cloud's.

A recent IDC report shows predicts spending on IoT could reach $772.5 billion this year and $1 trillion by 2020. (See IoT Spending to Reach $772B in 2018 – Report.)
