SAN JOSE, Calif. -- AEVIA, Inc., a new broadband telecommunications carrier whose metropolitan-area network begins operation this month, has chosen Alidian Networks' Optical Service Network family as its backbone technology because of the OSN products' ability to conserve costly fiber-optic bandwidth. The two companies have recently completed a month-long network trial. AEVIA is the first carrier to combine the functions of application service provider and competitive local exchange carrier (ASP-CLEC).

"Alidian was the only solution that would let us reduce the amount of fiber we have to deploy, yet still get the throughput we're looking for," said Doug Picard, AEVIA president and CEO. "WavePack carries all our different traffic types natively on the same wavelength, and WaveSwitch lets us reuse downstream bandwidth from an ADM drop. The bottom line is that we get a higher- speed network at a lower cost than our competitors, while maintaining a fully protected 'five nines' [99.999 percent uptime] environment."
