China Mobile Hubei and Huawei Lay the Foundation for Fully-connected 5G Factories, with Ultra-Reliable Networks

China Mobile Hubei and Huawei have developed a high-reliability networking solution based on Huawei's LampSite EE solution, and commercially verified this innovative solution in the Jingzhou Midea Washing Machine Factory in China's Hubei province, the world's first fully-connected 5G home appliance manufacturing facility. Results indicate that this solution lays a solid foundation for fully-connected 5G factories as it prevents services from being interrupted when single or multiple 5G network devices fail.

As the cornerstone of fully-connected factories, 5G networks carry out production and management services. Network failures can result in services being interrupted or devices being disconnected, or even lead to suspended production. Therefore, the secure and stable factory operations require the support of highly-reliable 5G networks. Huawei's LampSite EE solution is ideal for ensuring network reliability, as it features a three-layer (BBU, RHUB, and pRRU) reliability networking design and uses the multi-link redundancy technology of Distributed Massive MIMO. In the event that any pRRU fails, or any RHUB fails and causes all connected pRRUs to be disconnected, a normal neighboring pRRU can seamlessly take over services from the disconnected pRRU to ensure that there is no interruption to operations. In contrast to the traditional distributed antenna system (DAS) that is designed with a black-box system, LampSite EE is able to ensure visualized, manageable links and pRRUs, which makes it easy to quickly locate and rectify network faults.

According to the commercial verification, terminal access is not affected when any pRRU or RHUB is disabled. For factory building No.1, which has the largest service volume, we adopted a 2.6 GHz and 4.9 GHz multi-frequency and multi-cell networking mode. This ensures that when the baseband processing unit (BBP) of any cell under the same BBU fails, the BBP of other cells can take over services without missing a beat. In addition, BBPs work in redundancy mode and services in the faulty cells can be quickly restored. LampSite EE has been proven reliable enough to ensure stable access of toB services, so reliable that industry customers can trust 5G with their production services.

With the release of the Guidelines for the Construction of 5G Fully Connected Factories by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the development of fully-connected 5G factories will continue to accelerate in China. China Mobile Hubei will continue to work with Huawei and ecosystem partners to enhance its 5G capabilities, and increase the role of 5G in manufacturing sectors to transform the industries with digital and intelligent solutions, with the aim to meet the goals of Digital China and promote a new wave of industrialization.
