10:20 AM -- Arris Group Inc. (Nasdaq: ARRS) announced it scored a €4.5 million ($6.5 million) investment from IDA Ireland, the Irish government’s industrial development agency, to strengthen the cable vendor’s R&D operations on the Emerald Isle. Arris employs a staff of 52 in Cork, Ireland. (See Arris Cork Unit Pumps Up R&D.)

The company originally bought into Ireland in 2003 through its $2.8 million acquisition of cable modem equipment player Com21 Inc., which headquartered its European operations there.

Arris says it will invest the Irish dough in strengthening its D5 Universal Edge QAM platform and high-volume manufacturing capabilities. Did the IDA check include a few four-leaf clovers? Given the long list of edge QAM competitors, Arris can use all the help it can get selling the D5 to MSOs. (See Universal Edge QAM Market Heats Up and Who Makes What: Switched Digital Video .)
