PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 16, 2004-- Copper Mountain Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq:CMTN - News), a leading provider of intelligent broadband access solutions, announced a strategic agreement with Ericsson to create and market value-added solutions that address key issues in the architectural evolution of large carrier broadband access networks. The agreement includes a multi-year OEM, under which Ericsson can integrate Copper Mountain's VantEdge BRAS with its IP Service Engine and System Support. The initial focus of the alliance will be on large service providers in North America. The integrated solution will address challenges large-scale broadband access providers face such as those outlined in the DSL Forum Technical Report 059 (TR-059) entitled "DSL Evolution -- Architecture Requirements for the Support of QoS-Enabled IP Services." Specifically, these challenges include growing scalability concerns for supporting large numbers of broadband subscribers; creating, delivering and charging for differentiated value-added services; and the managed migration from ATM to packet-based backbones. To address these challenges, Copper Mountain and Ericsson will integrate best-in-class technologies and capabilities including:

  • VantEdge BRAS: Harnessing the latest in Intel network processor technology, the VantEdge offers a major advance in product architecture for BRAS functionality. This high performance, highly programmable NP-based architecture offers fundamental price, performance and flexibility advantages over legacy BRAS devices based on older technologies.

  • IP Service Engine (IPSE): Ericsson's IPSE is a comprehensive IP service management solution enabling service providers to create, deliver and bill for IP-related services in a multi-vendor, access-agnostic architecture. IPSE enables the operator to perform all aspects of subscriber management, service fulfillment and IP service control.

  • System Support: Ericsson's comprehensive customer support program includes flexible hardware and software installation and maintenance services.

  • Network Integration: Ericsson's experience with the world's largest telecom operators is the foundation for complete complex network integration to address operator objectives. The two companies have already begun integrating Ericsson's IP Service Engine with Copper Mountain's VantEdge Access BRAS and Element Management System for seamless interoperability and management.
