MERRIMACK, N.H. -- Ellacoya Networks(tm), Inc., a leading provider of intelligent bandwidth management solutions for telco, cable and wireless service provider networks, today announced an agreement with Sourcefire, Inc. to resell its Sourcefire Intrusion Sensors and Management Console as part of a turnkey intrusion management solution for broadband providers. Ellacoya will resell the leading intrusion detection/ prevention system (IDS/IPS) to its broadband service provider customers, with preferred distribution rights to the cable broadband operator market. The integrated solution enables broadband operators to detect network attacks at the earliest opportunity and automatically treat subscriber traffic to prevent the spread of Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks, worms and viruses on the network.

Sourcefire Intrusion Sensors are based on open source Snort, the world's leading intrusion detection system capable of performing real-time traffic analysis and packet logging on IP networks. Snort is the de facto standard and most precise IDS technology available, providing the earliest possible threat warning. The Sourcefire Intrusion Sensors provide rules-based analysis of known viruses and worms, and protocol analysis of unknown viruses/worms and zero-day threats.

"The ability to detect network attacks at the earliest opportunity is critical, and Sourcefire is consistently first to market with detection rules for network threats. We are pleased to offer this capability to our customers," said Ben Legault, Vice President of Marketing at Ellacoya Networks. "Together we offer a best-in-class solution for protecting broadband networks and subscribers in a simplified and automated way."

The Ellacoya Network Intrusion Manager (NIM), which is now shipping, is a plug-in software module to the Ellacoya IP Service Control System. It monitors the Sourcefire Intrusion Sensors to identify subscribers that are infected by worms and viruses, and signals the Ellacoya switch to take subscriber-specific action to prevent the attack from spreading further. Based on policies set by the broadband operator, subscribers can be automatically placed in quarantine, re-directed to a Web page for instructions on how to rid their computer systems of the infection, or even rate limited to thwart DoS attacks. The subscriber can also be automatically taken out of quarantine, or a rate limit lifted, once the computer has been cleansed or after a pre-set amount of time.

"Sourcefire's reputation has been built upon our ability to offer leading intrusion detection and prevention solutions that provide users with real-time, actionable alerts to potentially dangerous Internet threats," said Tom McDonough, President and COO of Sourcefire. "Sourcefire's precise detection and prevention combined with Ellacoya's approach to providing broadband network operators with the tools to limit the impact of Internet threats, will ultimately result in increased security for users of DSL and Cable Internet access."
