2Wire's BT Coup

8:50 AM -- BT Group plc (NYSE: BT; London: BTA) handed 2Wire Inc. a significant new opportunity today by deploying the home gateway specialist's boxes at the Ebbsfleet, England, site that is spearheading the carrier's fiber-to-the-premises push. (See BT Goes With Huawei for FTTH and BT Preps FTTC Trial.)

The decision to use 2Wire's home gateways is significant because its gives the San Jose, Calif.-based vendor its first taste of residential rollout success with BT, in addition to the existing deal to provide the British national carrier with gateways for its business users. (See 2Wire Reaches UK.)

The decision will also give Thomson S.A. (NYSE: TMS; Euronext Paris: 18453) something to think about. The French vendor has, until now, been BT's sole supplier of home hub gateways for BT's triple play and general broadband service rollout, but now 2Wire is in on the act, too. (See Thomson Ships Home Hubs.)

And it's not as if Thomson needed another distraction at the moment... (See Rose Shows His Thorns at Thomson.)
