10:00 AM -- The Minneapolis/St. Paul Star Tribune Website reports that the Saskatoon Parent of the Year contest is gonna be a hot one this year:

  • Professional hockey players give back to their communities in many ways. At this same Puckmasters training center, the Wild's Josh Harding runs a goalie camp and Nick Schultz runs an instruction camp for young forwards and defensemen.

But the 6-foot-7, 260-pound [Derek Boogaard] knows fighting. He has been doing it quite well ever since his infamous childhood wrestling matches with his two younger brothers, Aaron and Ryan, and yes, one younger sister, Krysten, who was treated like a brother.

So because Boogaard makes his living with his fists, he has decided to give back the way he knows best — with a left and a right.

On Thursday night, 20 hockey players between the ages of 12 and 18 were schooled by two of the sport's toughest combatants in Derek, who has had 26 fights in 113 games during his first two seasons with the Wild, and Aaron, 20, a former Wild draft pick, who has just signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins after getting 384 penalty minutes in his past two seasons with Tri-City in the Western Hockey League.

"The kids love it," said Derek Boogaard, 25. "It's fun to see how excited they are and how pumped up the parents get." [...]

"It's the same thing as teaching your kids defensive driving," said Shelley Keen, the [pumped up] mom of 13-year-old Justin.

Note to self: Stay off the Saskatchewan highways when little Justin gets his license.
