HILVERSUM, Netherlands -- Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU - News) has been selected by Fastfiber Netwerk B.V., headquartered in Oisterwijk, the Netherlands, to provide a managed services solution, which includes network integration and integrated fiber networking equipment for Fastfiber's broadband optical fiber network.

Under the terms of the three-year frame contract, Lucent Worldwide Services (LWS) will provide its entire services portfolio in support of Fastfiber's nationwide "fiber-to-the-business" network, including design, installation, integration, and network maintenance. Fastfiber will also leverage LWS' Global Network Operation Centre (GNOC) in Hilversum, which will provide round-the-clock operations and provisioning services, enabling best- in-class network operations and customer service support for Fastfiber's network. Lucent is also supplying and deploying optical Ethernet networking platforms from World Wide Packets and Foundry Networks.

Fastfiber is a new Dutch fiber bandwidth provider offering cost-effective network access onto its own fiber network. Fastfiber is dedicated to providing broadband connectivity to Dutch business parks with its "fiber-to- the-business" (FTTB) network, and is planning to provide national coverage, spanning some 3,600 kilometre of fiber.

Fastfiber's network will be open to service providers, enabling them to serve their enterprise customers with advanced services, such as high-speed Internet, high-speed backup facilities, remote storage services, Voice over IP, Virtual Closed Private Networks and Videobased security services. Fastfiber's market approach is unique for the Dutch market, because Fastfiber will not provide end-user services by itself, but only by third parties.

Fastfiber's network is a fully transparent layer-2 network, with MPLS/VPLS in the core network -- providing maximum end-to-end scalability, availability and quality of service. These are crucial capabilities in rapidly growing networks for demanding business customers.

"Our strategy is based on our strong conviction that the demand for bandwidth will increase in the coming years", says Erik Kamps, CEO of Fastfiber. "For small and medium-sized businesses, expensive fiber-based lines are not viable, economically. By sharing a fiber connection, business park customers can now get super-fast network access, which was not an option to many of them before."

"Through close cooperation with highly skilled partners such as Lucent, we will be able to offer a reliable and dependable network and network operations service to businesses of any size. We are confident in Lucent's ability to handle the entire management of the network, leaving Fastfiber room to focus on its core mission, serving its customers," Kamps adds.

"Lucent is proud to be Fastfiber's partner in this unique project", said Andy Williams, president, Lucent Technologies Europe. "Fastfiber's choice underlines our expertise in offering a customized package of managed and professional services and network integration capabilities for deploying optical Ethernet. We will provide Fastfiber with a reliable, fully-redundant network that will enable the operator to offer its business customers high- bandwidth services, cost-effectively."
