MARLBOROUGH, Mass. -- Axcel Photonics, a leading developer of single-mode, telecom laser-diodes, has introduced a broad-area laser diode product line. Axcel Photonics’ high-brightness, broad-area laser-diodes are used in printing, medicine, materials processing as well as telecommunications. As the brightness of the laser diode increases, the device value and the number of applications increase. Axcel Photonics’ broad-area laser-diodes have a brightness in excess of 40 mW per micron of aperture. Laser diodes with 100 ìm apertures are rated for 4 Watts of reliable, CW operation. Axcel Photonics offers the laser diodes at highly desirable wavelengths that match the absorption spectrum of rare-earth ions, 808 nm for neodymium, 945 nm and 980 nm for erbium, and 915 nm, 965 nm and 975 nm for ytterbium. The typical brightness of the better-performing commercial laser-diodes is approximately 20 mW per micron of aperture. Aluminum-free active regions to suppress device failure from the oxidation of aluminum are employed. These laser diodes have emission widths in the range of 50 ìm to 200 ìm which means that their output power is only in the range of 1 Watt to 4 Watts. “We produce laser diodes with aluminum in the active region for better device performance but passivate the lasers with a proprietary process developed for our GaAlAs/InGaAs/GaAs, 980 nm telecom pump diodes.” said Dr. Wei Gao, CEO and CTO of Axcel Photonics. “Aluminum-based material is easier to produce and improves device yield. Our customers are delighted because our diodes have twice the reliable power at no additional charge” adds Dr. Aland Chin, Vice President of Manufacturing.Axcel Photonics Inc.
